Mountain Dwarves
| Spoken Language: Dwarven, Common |
| Naming Conventions: Mountain Dwarf names use “heavy” consonants and rolling r’s. They are designed to be shouted across a deep chasm or a loud forge. They lack the “hissing” sounds of the Deep Orcs or the “rasping” of the Duergar, favoring a clean, resonant strike. A formal Mountain Dwarf introduction follows a strict hierarchy. To leave out a part of the name is often considered a sign of being a criminal, an outcast, or “Clanless.” They implement a three part name system, which are their given name at birth, their clan name, which is their primary identity, and their lineage. i.e. “I am Dolgrin of Clan Fireforge, son of Haki, who was son of Borag the Bold.” |
Overview
Mountain Dwarves are the survivors of the legendary Quest for Sky, an era-defining migration where they fought their way from the Darklands to the surface world. Today, they rule massive “Sky Citadels,” which are monumental fortress-cities built into the highest peaks of Golarion, most notably in the Five Kings Mountains. A dwarf’s identity is tied to their lineage. To be “Clanless” is a fate worse than death. They keep meticulous records of their ancestors, reaching back thousands of years. They believe that a soul is forged just like metal. Whether they are blacksmiths, stonemasons, or warriors, they strive for perfection. A “shoddy” piece of work is considered a moral failure.
Physical Description
Mountain Dwarves stand around 121 cm, but are incredibly dense, often weighing as much as a tall human. They have broad shoulders and thick, powerful limbs. For males, the beard is a matter of sacred honor. It is often braided with gold, silver, or “oath-rings.” Females also value their hair, often wearing it in complex, heavy braids. Their skin tones range from deep earthy browns to ruddy tans, often looking “weather-beaten” by mountain winds. Their eyes are usually dark and piercing.
