Deep Gnomes
| Spoken Language: Gnome, Undercommon |
| Naming Conventions: Deep Gnome names favor guttural stops that sound grounded and “thick,” lacking the airy “l” and “y” sounds common in surface gnome dialects. Svirfneblin use family or clan surnames. These names almost always relate to mining, stonework, or subterranean navigation. i.e. Belwar Ironfoot, Gribble Deepdigger, Gark, Beliss, Daphnee, and Lull. |
Overview
Deep Gnomes (also known as Svirfneblin) are the dour, subterranean cousins of the surface gnomes. Because they live in the dangerous, alien environment of the Darklands, they are focused on survival and underground diplomacy. Unlike their colorful surface relatives, Svirfneblin have been shaped by centuries of living in a world of darkness and monsters.
Physical Description
Their skin is the color of rock, which ranges from medium gray to a dark, earthy brown. Deep gnomes are wiry and lean, lacking the “chubbiness” some surface gnomes possess and their eyes are large and pale (usually gray or white). Males are typically completely bald, while females may have thin, stringy gray hair.
