Deep Dwarves
| Spoken Language: Dwarven, Undercommon |
| Naming Conventions: Duergar names are names built on toil, suffering, and the cold reality of the Darklands. While they share the “stony” phonetic structure of surface dwarves, they have stripped away any names that sound “joyful” or “bright.” Their names favor harsh, rasping consonants and flat, low vowels. For surnames, Duergar define themselves by their utility or the grim nature of their environment. i.e. Horgar Ironbound, Zardak Slavelash, Thulm, Khared, Darzk, Gorth, Rikka Bitterstone, Zhalia Chain-Maker, Mornish, Thraka, Klara, Hunda |
Overview
Deep Dwarves (also known as the Duergar) are the cruel, grey-skinned survivors of the Darklands. Because they were left behind during the “Quest for Sky” and spent centuries enslaved by the mind-flaying aboleths or fighting off Drow, they are much darker and more utilitarian than that of their surface cousins.
Physical Description
Their skin is a dull, sickly slate gray or soot-colored, allowing them to vanish into the shadows of the Darklands and have wide, pale eyes. Males and females alike are often bald or have thin, wiry hair that is white or pale gray. Their beards are usually unkempt or braided with iron wire.
