Drow

Underdark Outcasts

Spoken Language: Drow, Undercommon
Naming Conventions: These individuals often strip themselves of their House name to avoid being hunted, or they adopt a “shadow name” that sounds more like a title (e.g. “The Hollow Blade” or “Zszar No-House”).

Overview

Underdark Outcasts (also known as The Forsaken) are Drow who have been cast out, fled their cities, or are the sole survivors of a destroyed House. They are dead to their kind. To a drow city, an outcast is less than a slave. They are a “loose thread” that must be cut. They live in the “in-between” tunnels of Sekamina, surviving by hunting Darklands monsters or acting as mercenary guides. Some outcasts seek redemption or a different path. A tiny percentage become “Redeemed” Drow (usually Neutral), while others descend further into madness, becoming Fleshwarps (monstrously mutated by drow alchemists as punishment).

Physical Description

An Underdark Outcast looks like a “haggard ghost.” While they share the base anatomy of the Drow, obsidian skin and white hair, their appearance is stripped of the elegance and perfection maintained by the Great Houses. While House Drow have perfectly groomed, braided hair, an outcast’s hair is often matted, hacked short with a dagger, or wild and unkempt. It may be stained grey or yellow by cave dust, sulfur, or mineral-rich water. Their eyes often have a “thousand-yard stare.” Constant paranoia makes them wide and darting. Without the magical lamps of a city, their eyes are frequently bloodshot from straining in absolute darkness. Their dark skin is often covered in a map of “The Unnamed Scars.” In Drow society, scars are a sign of failure or low status. Outcasts are covered in them, from whip marks of their former mistresses to the jagged tears of Darklands predators.
